Tried "The Club" This Weekend

A group of us gave "The Club" a try this weekend. We have been meaning to try it for awhile now. We were there Saturday evening and I would definitely recommend making reservations (we did) and they were pretty much full for the evening.
I had heard lots of great feedback about this restaurant and wanted to try it for myself. The menu can seem a bit odd or daunting with menu items that include wild boar, blood puddings, eel sauce, moose bologna, and salt beef slaw.
Overall we had a very good experience. The service was great; the drinks fabulous, and the food was good. They have a drink called the Jam Jam that comes with a jam jam cookie on the glass (I had mine minus the cookie to stay gluten-free); these are wonderful. The Bellini was very good as well :)
Some of the appetizers we tried at the table were Chips & Guacamole, Scotch Eggs, Onion Rings, and Oysters Rocky Harbor. I had heard that the QV 1892 Onion Rings were some of the best around. Unfortunately I could not try these as they are not gluten-free :(  Most of the table tried them though and all thought they were good, maybe not the best, but good. The Oysters, on the other hand, were said to be among the best eaten by the two who had ordered them. I had the chips & guacamole as it was a gluten-free option and I am a guacamole lover. The guacamole was very good with just enough heat.
For the mains, there were a couple of orders of the Hen & Ribs, Fried Chicken & Toutons, Wild Boar & Chorizo Sloppy Joe, and a Steak & Oyster Special. Hubby thought the ribs were fantastic and will just get those next time as you have the option of just the hen or just the ribs instead of both. A friend said the Sloppy Joe was good. The steak special was very well liked. (Comment today was one of the best steaks at a restaurant).
For myself and a friend, who are not huge eaters, we didn't order actual mains. She ordered the starter Black Bean & Chirizo Chili as her main. She said it was good but pretty sweet for her. It is a pretty large portion as well. I ordered the special Caesar Salad (no croutons) and the starter Cock-a-leekie Soup. I should have ordered just one instead of both soup and salad; after the chips and guacamole, and a few drinks, it was too much for me. I found the soup and salad both good.
Overall, it was a good evening out. Will I go back again? Maybe for a Jam Jam cocktail and Hubby wants the Oysters Rocky Harbor and the Ribs again  :) I would love to try the Onion Rings and their Fish & Chips; if I can ever eat gluten again.

Went out cod fishing this morning with my Sis and Dad :) Caught our limit :) Nothing better than fresh cod for dinner that you caught yourself. Fried it up in bacon fat in a cast iron pan on the BBQ. Had local yellow potatoes from Lester's with butter and green peas. Very yummy indeed :)

Week 3 Gluten-Free :)

So far so good. I have eliminated all gluten and most grains from my diet for 3 weeks now. The only grain I have eaten during this time is corn as that one doesn't seem to be a problem for me right now. I may eliminate it later to check for sure. Meals have been good and even tried a great new veggie side this week.

Excellent New Veggie Recipe :)

We are getting tired of the same veggie sides over and over again. This can be a problem when you are avoiding grains; especially gluten. Went on Pinterest looking for some new ideas and came across Zucchini Summer Squash Tomato Gratin. We had already picked up some local zucchini from Lester's so this was perfect. The recipe called for summer squash which I couldn't find at the grocery store today so I made it with a little extra zucchini and tomato instead and it was still fantastic. This will be a new recipe for us for sure :) We had it with smoky tea-aki (Steeped Tea spice) pork chops; very yummy.

Great Gluten-Free Lunch at Oliver's!

Finally getting some great summer weather! Hubby took yesterday off and we treated it as a mini vacation at home. Spent the afternoon downtown wandering around and had a great late lunch at Oliver's. I am still gluten-free and they were wonderful about accommodating me :) I often get their House Salad which is wonderful. It has candied pecans and bacon, need I say more? I swap out the blue cheese for goat cheese, still can't do blue cheese. I actually ordered the salmon special; yes, I ordered salmon :) It was done with honey and almonds and sounded good. Hubby asked me if I realized it was going to have salmon in it :) Haha. For those who follow me, I am not a huge fan of salmon but this was pretty good :) I also had the house salad as my side and a Crantini, or two :) Hubby had the Halibut special with fries and thought it was great as well :)

For those who have been following my recent grain-free journey, this is almost the end of 3 weeks and I had a bad few days this past week and into the weekend. I was feeling off for about 4 days and pretty ill for one day. According to the Wheat Belly people it was likely wheat withdrawal; who knew there was such a thing. I started taking a probiotic and now all is well. If that's what happens going off wheat then I may never eat it again as it was pretty bad.

My name is Michelle and I am tired of struggling with my weight. I am stopping the struggle.
This blog began several years ago as a healthy lifestyle change (really, diets in disguise if I'm being totally honest). Now it is evolving into a non-diet blog and that makes me extremely happy.
I have recently started this new way of thinking. There have been some bumps in the road, it hasn't been easy, I still question, but I am still learning.
If you struggle with weight and have issues with food and body image than join me on my journey. Hopefully we can learn together :)
