I am talking a couple of weeks off so likely no posts for a little while. When I start up again I may have to continue with the idea of grain-free and see where it takes me :)
There may be something to this idea of grain-free. I went completely grain-free for almost 2 weeks and I noticed a great improvement. I wasn't as tired, my joints ached less, I started losing weight again and I overall felt happier and healthier. Went to Brew-Tine and had grains again, and continued to for a couple of more days and then started to feel pretty crappy again.

Even though I have been eating well and cutting out grains recently I knew last night I would break the rules. We had tickets for several months for Brew-Tine in Holyrood, Beer & Poutine, and I wasn't going to miss it. So last night I did ingest wheat and I am paying for it today; it may have something to do with the amount of beer as well, lol :) My favorite beer from all tried was the welcome beer :) My least favorite was probably the Skull Splitter.
The Jigg's Dinner Poutine was to die for. This was fantastic. I could eat that one all night. It was a mix of potato, carrot and turnip fries; topped with local cheese curd, dressing, salt meat and turkey gravy. Nom nom nom. The Moose was ok and I didn't like the Sicilian or the Nacho ones enough to finish those. The donut dessert at the end was fantastic as well :) Many people question why I do not use vegetable oils because many believe these to be healthier oils. Here are just a couple of sites discussing the problems with vegetable oils:
100 Days of Real food site discusses the problem with refined oils. Authority Nutrition discusses vegetable oils being toxic. Wellness Mama discusses never eating vegetable oils or margarine. Again we use oils and fat in moderation. When cooking in fats, I only cook with butter, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or sesame oil. There are a couple of other choices but I just haven't used them yet. 1. Diet Soft Drinks. I will admit I have never been a big soda drinker but if I did drink it I usually tried to get the diet version because it was "healthier". Yeah, right. No soda is healthy but the diet ones are usually even worse with more added chemicals and artificial stuff. I stay away from all soft drinks now, pretty much 100%. 2. Granola Bars. I was a sucker for these things. I ate a lot of different granola bars, thinking I was snacking healthy; nope. Most of these bars are full of added sugars, chemicals, and artificial flavors. The only snack bars I eat now are certain flavors of Larabar because I can find ones with minimal ingredients that are 100% real food, and a locally made Paleo bar I found at Real Food Market. 3. Cereal. Yes, cereal; and believe me this was a hard one to give up. I was a big cereal eater. Had cereal most mornings and often for snack and even for dinner sometimes. Now when I want cereal I make Granola, Paleo Granola or oatmeal. No more boxed cereal for me until I can find one with only real ingredients and no added chemicals to maintain freshness. 4. Flavored Oatmeal. I guess I could have combined this one with cereal above. I often ate those single serving flavored oatmeal packs because they are suppose to be so good for you and they are so quick and easy to make. Well, even the lower sugar ones are high in sugar and can have questionable ingredients. I just make regular oatmeal now and add my own fruit and things to it. It doesn't take more than a couple of minutes if you use quick cook oats. Much better tasting and better for you. 5. 100 Calorie Snack Packs. I counted calories or points for years and years and loved the idea of these things. Not now. Most of them are not even food when you look at the ingredient list. I now stick to more real food options for snacks and desserts; calories be damned :) 6. Margarine. We always bought margarine, healthier brands made with olive oils and having the healthy heart symbol, and thought we were doing a great thing. Hubby has watched what he eats for several years due to his family history. He watches his cholesterol for health reasons and we always thought we were eating pretty well. Now we eat butter instead of margarine. We have for over a year now and all our blood work is great. Now don't get me wrong; we don't eat big mounds of butter on a spoon daily. Again things in moderation, but I would rather eat a natural product like butter with 1 or 2 ingredients instead of a factory-made margarine with a ton of questionable ingredients. Check out the other 5 foods I won't be eating again that I posted last week :)
Still eating real food and remaining grain-free along with milk-free. I will admit it has been difficult and it isn't a cure-all, but I am feeling a whole lot better. My fatigue is almost gone and my daily aches and pains are minimal. I will keep it up for awhile and see how it works out.
Food today was a Smoothie for breakfast. First snack was apple slices. Lunch was leftover Chicken Stir-fry from last night. Second snack was another smoothie; I find myself craving these now. Dinner was fresh trout from my Dad :) Thanks Dad. I fried it up in avocado oil with Smoky Tea-aki seasoning from Steeped Tea. Yummy. We had it with steamed brussel sprouts and carrots topped with a little garlic salt and butter. Very simple but still excellent. A great day. Still grain-free :) Smoothie for breakfast. Apple for snack. Lunch was leftover fish cake (without the cake) from last night. Dinner tonight was chicken stir-fry; no recipe followed. I just used veggies I had. I stir-fried chicken in avocado oil with salt and pepper. I then stir-fried onions, carrots and broccoli with lime olive oil, garlic salt and pepper. Next I added peppers and water chestnuts and the chicken back in at the end. It was really good and easy; especially since Hubby did most of the veggie chopping :)
I recently bought fresh turmeric to add to my morning smoothies because it is suppose to be great for inflammation. I have never used it before and didn't realize it stains everything. I cut off a small amount and it stained my knife; so now, it seems, I have a turmeric knife :) Had a great smoothie this morning with frozen berries, banana, spinach, coconut water, goji berries, a date, cacao, turmeric, almond butter and ice. Also had a boiled egg for some extra protein. I have been missing my morning tea recently. I am not really eliminating it but I am eliminating cow's milk and I don't enjoy my tea as much just black so I have just been going without. Today I tried a new recipe for dairy free Coconut Creamer. It was ok, not great, but has potential :) I may have used too much in my tea as well and it does start to separate. I will keep trying.
Lunch today was leftover Beef Stew from last night. Snack was an apple with almond butter. Dinner tonight was my Fish Cake recipe but without the cake :) Once the fish and onions were mixed into the mashed potatoes we ate it as is. No making patties and frying them; just wasn't in the mood. It was delicious regardless. Wanted something for dessert so I decided to make dairy-free ice cream in my Vitamix. I used the Coconut Creamer I made earlier today and frozen berries; it was delicious. Alternate title from Hubby "Smitty's Suck-It" Had a great day today. Made a smoothie for breakfast with spinach, fruit, goji berries, tumeric and coconut water. Very nice. I am actually finding I crave a smoothie in the morning now :) Hubby cooked brunch today and made a delicious breakfast skillet. It was potato, pepper, onion, organic sausage, eggs, salt & pepper, and grated cheddar. It was so good. A keeper for sure :) No lunch today since we had a big brunch :) I had an apple and almond butter for snack and then made a big pot of Beef Stew for dinner with a glass of red wine. Yummy!
Still doing great eating grain-free and milk-free while sticking to real food this week. Started the grain & milk free idea on Monday, and today and yesterday were the first days in I don't remember when that I felt good. No afternoon crash and no need for a rest. Yay! Maybe this is what I need.
Breakfast was a spinach and fruit smoothie. Snack was some olive oil potato chips while out running errands. Lunch was leftover salmon and veggies from last night. Dinner tonight was the same as last Friday :) Bison burgers (mine without the bun) and homemade fries. All delicious and all cooked by Hubby; Woohoo! Thanks Hun :) Today is day 4 of no grains and no milk and I have to say that today is the first day in weeks, if not months, that I haven't felt exhausted. I actually felt pretty normal today. Fingers crossed I am on to something here :)
Still doing well this week food-wise. Sticking to 100% real food options and no grains of any kind as well as no cow's milk. Having my Almond Strawberry Smoothies for breakfast and sometimes a boiled egg. Having leftovers for lunch. Snacks are usually bananas and sometimes an apple with almond butter. Tonight we had a new salmon recipe for dinner; and Hubby cooked everything; as I had to run out unexpectedly at mealtime. We had Slow-Baked Salmon with Honey Mustard Glaze, Roasted Asparagus and steamed carrots with butter. It was great (for salmon, not a favorite of mine but still trying to eat it), even though mine was reheated as I was late getting home. A keeper according to Hubby. It was pretty easy and he loved it as well. |
